How To Identify Moving Scams

DON"T BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BY MOVERS

No one likes to move. It causes stress and can be a daunting task to take on by yourself. If you hire a moving company your expectations are they will do the bulk of the work and relieve you of the stress of moving. The last thing you want to experience is hiring a local mover, then finding out you have been taken advantage of by either price, lack of service or both.

Most companies are reputable and will provide quality service; however you still have to watch out for the scammers. Below we have listed a few things to look out for prior to hiring a moving company in Jacksonville.

WARNING SIGNS OF A MOVING SCAM

Scammers know what they are doing. Most people are motivated by price and this is how they will lure you in. If you see a deal that sounds too good to be true, it more than likely is. The price that is advertised is usually not the full price for their services. This is where they will get you. The price they advertise is a base price, then they add in a price for stairs, loading and unloading, etc…By the end you are paying more that all of the other quotes you received. These types of movers won’t provide a contract in writing and we have heard many stories where a customer’s items were held hostage until they pay the movers the entire fee. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done, because there is no agreed upon terms in writing.

WAYS TO IDENTIFY REPUTABLE MOVERS

Research, research, research….Use your online resources to find out who is reputable versus who you will want to stay away from. All reputable moving companies will have positive reviews on Google+, Angie’s List, YP, etc….A company that wants to build their credibility online will usually provide quality service and will ask you for feedback.

Look at longevity. If a company has been in business for 30 years, chances are they know what they are doing, and they do it well. This is not to say that businesses that have been in business for only a few years are not reputable, they just don’t have the track record of an established business. A reputable mover will also assign a moving coordinator or a point person to handle your move from start to finish. This individual is responsible for coordinating the entire move from start to finish. If you hire a company that has a point person for your move, you are in good hands.

BE PROACTIVE AND PLAN

Never book a move last minute. Always try and plan ahead this way you leave yourself with options as to who you can hire. You never want to choose a mover because they were the only one available to move you on short notice. Ask a lot of questions to qualify the mover. Get a contract in writing that shows an itemized list of services and fees so you have no surprises. Also check on the companies credentials: license and insurance information.

IS A MOVING DEPOSIT NORMAL?

Most moving companies will ask for a moving deposit. Typically this will be a small amount of money. When a moving company asks for a large upfront deposit or the full amount you should be concerned. That is not normal practice for reputable movers.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE BEEN SCAMMED?

If you have been the victim of a moving scam get the name of the owner or office manager. Reach out to the BBB and report the business. If you paid with a credit card, call your credit card company and let them know what occurred and what recourse you have.

Always do your homework so that you do not get scammed by a less than reputable moving company.
