Is your current house too big for you? Have your kids left for college and now it’s just you and your partner? When there are only 1-2 people living in a 4 bedroom house, it becomes really difficult to maintain and it’s a burden on your pocket as well. If you think it’s time for you to downsize your home and move into a place that is comfortable for just you and your significant other, you’ll need to get rid of a lot of your stuff to fit into a smaller and cozier abode.

Essential Tips for Downsizing Your Home

Here is a list of essential tips that will help you to easily downsize your home:

  1. Make a list – Before you begin throwing everything out, make a list of all the items in your house that you need and can’t live without, and then make a list of all the things you don’t need. That way, you will know where to begin with downsizing your house.
  2. Start reducing your belongings months in advance – Don’t wait for the last minute to throw everything out. You will end up getting rid of things you may need. In this case, start reducing your belongings months in advance. Take some time out each week to get rid of old clothes, old furniture and things you don’t think you will need in the new house.
  3. Digitize what you can – You may have old CDs, DVDs, and photo albums that take up storage space. With all the technology we have now, these memories can easily be digitized and saved on external hard drives, laptops, and tablets, or on the cloud. This will save you space as you move into the new house.
  4. Get an idea of the floor plan for your new house and compare it to your current one – Before moving out, make sure you get a feel of the size of your new rooms as compared to your current ones. This way, you will know how much furniture will fit in the house and what will not. Using photos of your new house may help you in this process.
  5. Use a color coded system when packing – When the time comes for you to pack everything, use a color coded system to help you. Each box you pack should be for a specific room, so you can label each room’s boxes with a different color. That way, you won’t get confused once you move into the new house.
  6. Get rid of things that don’t have sentimental value – There is no point in keeping items that you have in bulk, especially when they have no sentimental value. You don’t need to keep 12 mixing bowls, or 20 pairs of socks, or keep 2 pairs of the same shoes.
  7. Don’t throw anything in the garbage – When you are downsizing your house, make sure that all the unwanted items are kept away from the trash. You can reuse, sell, donate, and recycle any of these items. You can even give your used or almost perfect belongings to charity.
