First Time Movers

If you are first time mover, it can be very exciting to get ready to go through the process of moving to a new home or apartment. There are many things you will want to plan for and to think about, such as having enough boxes and choosing the right moving company. The process can be stressful and overwhelming however if you plan and organize your move you will get through it virtually stress free.

Being a first-time mover there are many things you have not experienced, below we have listed some of the more common mistakes made by first time movers.

Procrastinating – Taking Your Time Packing

Since this is your first time you may be thinking this won’t take long, I don’t have much stuff to move. I can just toss all my items in a few boxes and the movers will do the rest. Unfortunately, most moving does not go according to plan. Typically packing your items does take longer than expected and procrastinating can inadvertently cost you time and money, especially if you are still packing while the movers have arrived.

A good rule of thumb is to give yourself a one to two-month window to organize and pack prior to your moving day. The more time you prepare in advance the better off you will be for your moving day. Waiting last minute will not only stress you out, but it may cost you significantly more in moving fees.

Not Thinning Out The Items You No Longer Need

Another common mistake for first time movers is not decluttering prior to packing. This is an important step because the more items you have the more it will cost you for movers. Also, when you move you are still having to store items you no longer need or use.

You may be thinking to yourself I don’t have enough items to worry about decluttering. Regardless of the amount of stuff you have accumulated over the years, you will not want to skip this step. This step is very easy and can actually help you thin out your items, make some money and donate items to a good cause. You will want to go room by room and divide your items into 3 piles. First pile is everything you will be keeping; the second pile is everything you will be donating, and the third pile is everything you can sell. All items you sell can be used towards your moving fund.

Bringing along unnecessary items that you no longer need or have a use for just kicks the can down the road and will end up cost you more money in the long run.

Not Having Enough Packing Material

After you have completed the decluttering process you will want to start packing your items. This is one of the more common problems to occur, not having enough packing material. You will find out when you are packing, it is amazing how little it takes to fill up boxes. So if you have underestimated the amount of boxes needed, you will need to go to your local hardware store or contact your movers for supplies. A good rule of thumb is for a standard 2 bedroom home you will need around 60 boxes, and another 20 or so boxes for each additional room.

Not Planning For Florida’s Weather

A week prior to your move you will be running around trying to get things finished. The last thing on your mind will be the local weather forecast. Unfortunately, this can be a big problem. Moving during a rain storm can ruin your items and slow down your move. If bad weather is in the forecast, being prepared is of the utmost importance. Start wrapping your important boxes in plastic, use plastic bags to protect clothes or items that cannot get wet. Also communicate with your Jacksonville moving company as they can provide tips or let you know their moving procedures during inclement weather.

Moving By Yourself

Most of us are all about saving money, however this is not an area where you want to risk your items or your health by moving by yourself.

Professional movers will do all of the lifting, they will make sure your items get to your location without being damaged and the cost is not as bad as you think.
